The Owlbear has an enormous HP pool, the ability to increase its own Strength, a close-range AoE, and the ability to jump into battle and knock enemies prone. It’s an absolute brute, and becomes the backbone of the best BG3 Druid build soon after acquiring it.
At the character creation screen and again at Level 6, Rogues get to choose two extra skills to gain Expertise in, for a total of four. Expertise is a little bit different than just being Proficient in a skill.
The best Wizard companions in BG3 are Shadowheart as the primary support of the party, Lae’Zel as your melee tank, and Astarion as another melee party member who can do extremely high damage and provide some use out of combat too.
The Half-Orc race is one of the best races in Baldur’s Gate 3 for Druids who spend most of their time in melee combat. The racial passives of the Half-Orc race still work when in Wild Shape form, letting a Druid tear through enemies with stronger Critical Hits and a resilience to Death unique to Half-Orcs.
At level one, they also have the additional spell options «Faerie Fire» and «Sleep,» allowing them to outline targets to grant advantage or just put their enemies to sleep. At level three, they can also choose «Phantasmal Force» and «Calm Emotions,» letting them deal repeating psychic damage that will shift damage type to match the last attack that hit the target and allow them to immunize themselves and their allies from being charmed or frightened. Level five adds the options of «Plant Growth» and «Blink,» letting them create difficult terrain and flicker out of reality after their turn to evade attacks (sometimes Fey Magic is fickle.)
The most broken way to play a Thief Rogue is to keep them separate from the rest of the party before combat, then sneak to a vantage point, and fire off a Sneak Attack for free before entering the fray. Oftentimes, this one-shots weak to medium-strength enemies.
Where multiclassing is concerned, Warlock pairs excellently with the other Charisma Caster classes: Paladin, Bard, and Sorcerer. A Paladin with Pact of the Blade can dump their strength stat entirely and focus on Charisma, gaining better spellcasting with no loss in their melee combat capabilities, while also using the Warlock’s spell slots (which recharge on a short rest) to dish out Divine Smites more often. Access to Metamagic from the Sorcerer can allow some incredibly busted combos through the use of quickened spell and distant spell, including the ability to rapid-fire 6 eldritch blasts in a single turn at level 10. Bards with the College of Swords subclass can make excellent use of the Pact of the Blade to reduce the number of attributes they need to worry about, while also gaining access to a much wider range of damage and support spells from the Bard spell list and Magical Secrets.
If you are dead set on including a character in your party, simply talk to Withers to respec them to one of the optimal Rogue companion classes listed above. This way, you won’t miss out on that character’s questline, and you won’t have to suffer from an improperly balanced party.
There are a total of eight BG3 Schools (subclasses) Wizard players can try out, each of which focuses on different aspects of the class, and offers a selection of unique skills, proficiencies, and other features. As you level up in one of these BG3 Wizard subclasses, you will gain more abilities that are unique to your subclass choice.
This table displays the best Wizard build spells you should have equipped and in your Spellbook at these level brackets, whether from choices made while leveling or by learning them from a Scroll. These abilities synergize well with the Evocation Wizard build playstyle and mostly include straight-up damaging spells, ways to CC and debuff enemies, and spells that alter the environment to set up powerful elemental combos or provide a barrier against attacks.
